I took the ACT for the first time in October and got a 34 composite, which I was really happy with. I only got a 29 in English though (and an 8 on the essay), and this puts me below 25th percentile at most of the colleges I'm looking at (although my composite is at 75th or greater). Should I retake it and just worry about the English writing sections? If I do retake it would colleges care if my composite goes down as long as it brings my superscore up? Finally, how important is the essay in admission?

You should check out the schools that you want to apply to whether they superscore ACT, a lot of the top selective colleges just take highest composite.

I would definitely take it again; in my opinion, english is the easiest section and therefore the easiest to bring up. Just a little more practice and maybe review of those grammar rules will help. You definitely have 35 potential with a little practice and just try to maintain everything else as much as you can - if you dropo in the other categories a little second time it’s not going to matter
