Should I retake, and what should I be aiming for?

On the SAT I got a 2150 combined total, a little lower than what I was expecting. However, these were the stats:

CR: 700
Math: 680
Writing: 770
Essay: 12

Really disappointed in math, considering I have an A in AP Calculus BC...ugh. Anyway, I think that this score is okay enough for American and maybe GW, but Georgetown only looks at CR and Math, and 700/680 is really not great... I'm going to try to find a time to retake it, but I still need to fit all the subject tests in.

1) What should I be aiming for with CR and Math?
2) How bad would it be if I didn't get a chance to retake it? I currently have straight As with multiple AP classes and should have the same next year, multiple extra-curriculars I'm dedicated to, and 1000+ volunteer hours (by the end of senior year) and hopefully a writing internship this summer. To what extent would bad SAT scores affect my chances of getting into Georgetown?

Anyoneeee ?

For Georgetown, I would def. consider re-taking SAT just for a better shot. You only have a few more dates so I would get the Subject Test out of the way before taking SAT I.

My main question is what math+CR scores should I be shooting for?

I would definitely retake the SAT for georgetown. I would be shooting for at least a 1500 CR+M breakdown.

oh srry. 1500 is probably the max you would need, though it would be good to aim higher. You would be safe with a 1450+. btw, if you increase your scores to around 1500, you, with the focus you show w/ your ECs, could aim higher than American and GW. Colleges put quite a bit of importance on SATs b/c it’s standard at all schools. The difficulty of getting a 4.0 varies from school to school so SAT is depended on as a measurement. You still have have a shot at Georgetown with a 1380, but it would be good to mitigate risk. If you don’t get a chance to re-take, I would still feel optimistic about your chances.

Okay awesome, I’ll study up, and hopefully get a better score the second time around. I took the SAT after three consecutive APs, so I’m really hoping my mind was just tired.

dblazer, I actually really like American and GW. Good International Relations programs, in DC (where I want to work and spend the rest of my life), great LGBT life, etc. Are there specific other schools you’d recommend?

If you plan to do international relations and happen to enjoy the atmosphere of the schools, then go for them. I was just thinking that with your quality, you could aim for top 20 schools with better overall undergrad (but not necessarily better IR programs).

Cool, cool. I’ll still take a look at the top 20 schools and see if any beat GW+AU in IR/LGBT life/ROTC opportunities/etc, but G-town, AU, and GW initially caught my eye due to its location in DC.
