So I got my scores today for the October examination and have a 770 for Biology and a 760 for Math 2. Bio I am fine with considering I have not taken AP Bio. I am kinda disappointed with the Math 2 score because when I was looking at MIT's middle 50%, the range was 760-800, making me fall in the 25%.

I really want to get into MIT and would like to give myself the best chance possible. Do think that I should accept standby testing for the November SAT to retake Math 2 and/or Biology?

Here are some of my other stats if it helps:
UW GPA: 3.91
W GPA: 5.00
5 on Calc BC, no advanced science classes until this year

Here’s a similar question. Our daughter visited MIT last month and loved it. She’s captain of her school’s robotics team and said the whole campus felt like one big robotics team – lots of camraderie, unpretentious, fun even though facing tons of work and long hours.

She just got her November SAT’s and now she faces a quick decision about retaking in Dec. She got 800s in CR and Writing and 700 in Math. It seems crazy to even think of retaking with a 2300 BUT the 25th percentile Math score for MIT is 740 and she is nervous about applying with a score so far below the 25th percentile.

Obviously a 700 is a great score for just about any other university in America AND she got a 780 on the SAT Math II and a 5 on AP Calc AB (but a B+ in AP Calc).

Her gpa is 4.1 weighted and she’s got four other 5’s on APs. She has terrific EC activities, spent the last couple summers studying and working abroad and will have great letters of rec. So this is purely about whether MIT will look at her 700 SAT Math score and say "great kid but she just won’t be able to handle the math at MIT.

There’s no other school to which she’s applying where she’d think twice about this, but MIT is unique and as I said, she really loved MIT.

@Washdc, It’s definitely not worth retaking it. It is clear that she is “academically qualified,” so the difference of a few points is irrelevant at this point. She already has a fantastic score, as well as great scores on the math SAT II and AP exam. If she wants to retake it to be more confident at having a shot, they would superscore, yes. If not, it would certainly NOT be the reason for someone to be admitted vs. rejected.

MIT admissions officers generally glance quickly at the scores to be sure an applicant it qualified and competitive in terms of scores. However, they do not use those scores to differentiate among applicants. Anybody with a 2300 is clearly qualified.

My advice: don’t worry about it – there are many better ways to spend a Saturday morning! :-)

Best of luck to your daughter – MIT is awesome!

Hi Do you recommend to retake SAT II physice (my daughter had a 650 for SAT II in physics after taking honors physics class, 800 in math II, AP calculus 5, GPA 4.0 uw and 4.2/4.3 w. SAT I 2250 with math 740)?
