I took Math II last June and got a 690 (61st percentile). I'm signed up for Chem and Math II again on Saturday. I feel pretty well prepared for chem (aiming for mid to high 700's), but I have done very little studying for math (I know, I'm a lazy sack of ****). I'm applying RD as an engineering major, and I know that a 690 is going to look pretty weak to engineering schools. Is it really worth killing myself over the next few days with studying or should I just accept a 690?

If it matters, I got 2160 on the SAT (740 M). And I'm not applying anywhere insanely selective.

Okay I worded my question badly. I know that I SHOULD retake it, but I don’t really want to do that unless it’s absolutely necessary, because I’m pretty unprepared. So I guess my question is really how much a 690 will affect my chances. I’m applying to UMass, Rensselaer, U of Rochester, BU, Northeastern, Lehigh, WPI, and Carnegie Mellon as a reach.

You will already be there to take the Chem SAT2. Just take the Math level 2 as well. You will most likely imporve, because you have that much more math under your belt. With subject tests you can pick and choose which you send in, so the worst thing that could happen would be that you do worse than 690…then you just send your 690 score and disregard the worse score. More likely, you will improve. You are so close to breaking 700…don’t quit now.

Okay, another question: how do the practice tests in the Princeton Review math book compare to the actual test? I just took one and got 800 easily, and I find it hard to believe that I’ve somehow become way better at math since June.

Its really not going to do much, but yea - if you are there take it, but its no biggie- you got the scores you need to get in anyways, concentrate on Chem and don’t let math bother you - look at it as a side thing.

While you’re there you might as well retake it. I went from a 720 to 770 Chem score with no prep in between. You’re just a better tester somedays. So who knows, maybe your 690 will turn into a 720, which is pretty decent.

“Is it really worth killing myself over the next few days with studying or should I just accept a 690?”

alex6990, my advice would be: relax. 690 is a fine score. You do not have to retake each test. It really does not matter whether you get 740 or 690. It might be great for your confidence and self-esteem, but in fact this is up to a university whether or not it wants you. So RELAX and do not stress out too much.

I got a 690 in June and I’m retaking. As for what Honors Centaur is doing, my friend got a 740 and he’s retaking as well. I’ve also done very little studying because I had a ridiculous week, but I did legit waste what time I had today. I’m really taking both this test and Chem for MIT, so I’d like at least 740 for Math and 720 for Chem.
