Should I retake my 32?

please help me out. i'm a senior and i have taken the SAT and got a 1850; i wont be taking that again. on the ACT i got a 32:
Math: 29
Reading: 33
Science: 32
English: 35
Combined English/Writing: 33
Essay: 10

i need to take two subject tests as well. should i retake the ACT?

if i do retake, should i take it with writing?

Well personally, I’d be really happy with that score. But it really depends on where you’re aiming to go to college. If you’re shooting for the ivies, yeah, I’d retake it just to be safe.

Personally, though, I’d focus on the subject tests to do really well on those (if they’re actually required by the schools you’re interested in).

As for writing, most colleges don’t care as long as you get an 8 or above (that’s what princeton review told me anyways).

I would say yes, as long as you focus on raising your math. I had similar scores my last test (32 composite- 35eng, 34 read, 31 math, 28 science) so I’m doing practice tests and focusing on raising primarily my science section, so If you think you can raise math I would go for it, if you think a 29 is the best you can do I wouldnt.

Seeing that Math is sub-30, I think retaking it wouldn’t be a bad option. If you can increase your math score and keep everything else at least the same, you’ll be able to get at least a 33.

I retook a 34 if that makes you feel better, lol.

Why do you need to take two subject tests? Most schools - even the Ivies - don’t require SAT Subject Tests if you submit the ACTs.

I agree with IBStudent92. The answer to your question of whether to take the ACT again (or not) depends on where you’re hoping to get in. Look at the admitted student scores reported in the admissions webpage of your top three schools; they also appear in college guides (Fiske, Barron’s, etc). If a 32 places you solidly in the top 75% of students admitted to those schools, then I’d say that you’re fine. If not, I’d retake the ACT.

A 32 is great, but you have to do what satisfies you. If it’s gonna bother you, retake it.

To bring some objectivity into the conversation, here are the national percentiles corresponding to individual and composite ACT test scores: [ACT Score Information: National Ranks for Test Scores and Composite Score](<a href=“ACT Test Scores | ACT Scoring | ACT”>ACT Test Scores | ACT Scoring | ACT)

And, as a point of reference, here are tables (scroll down in each case) that show the 25th-75th percentiles for students enrolled in:

@IBstudent: i want to get into Columbia and NYU.

@heywatchitbuddy: can you recommend me any book that concentrates solely on the Math?

@Peytoncline: wow, retook a 34? isn’t that basically useless?

@beatitudo: i went on collegeboard and it said that Columbia requires 2 subject tests, regardless of whether you are submitting ACT or not. maybe i misread the information? can you please clarify this?

thanks everyone for your helpful replies.

mrabia786, I checked Columbia’s website ([Application Requirements | Columbia University Office of Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/admissions/applications/firstyear/requirements)), and you are right. I stand corrected. Many schools - including the likes of Yale and Brown - don’t require SAT subject tests if you take the ACTs, but Columbia does.

I think retaking is always a good idea. My first try I scored a 31 but after three retakes I scored 33. If you retake, though, you have to keep in mind that your scores can drop too. My third score was only a 29 because of outside conditions I couldn’t control. I would suggest the Kaplan computer program as a review guide because it is interactive rather than just practice tests on paper.

Also, keep in mind that while Ivy League schools are ideal, there ARE other options out there (especially if you are looking for financial aid). With a 32 you can score full tuition at almost every public university in the US.
