Should I retake organic chemistry 2?

So I just got a C+ in organic chemistry 2. I had an A average but was destroyed by the final exam.

My GPA is now a 3.87. I got A's in bio, chem, calc, stats, and ochem 1 lab.

I got my first B in ochem 1.

I got my first C+ in ochem 2.

All the rest of my classes are A's. Do I need to retake it to get into medical school?

I am only asking because I showed a downward trend from B to C+ rather than improvement so I'm not sure how that will look. I really thought I was doing well in the course and I want to be a doctor so badly I'll do whatever it takes, even retake the class.

But if someone knows of someone who did poorly in ochem but still got in I'd be happy to know. I think I understand it well enough for an MCAT, I score around a 12 on the section during practice.

There are two regular posters here who got a C+ on OChem–and it didn’t prevent either of them from getting accepted to med school.

I’m not going to name names–they can out themselves of they wish to.

I’m having trouble getting into research so I’m worried without substantial research experience it will hurt me dramatically. I always figured unless you have a lot of EC’s you need perfect grades so this recent grade is disconcerting. I don’t know if this is any factor but I go to the University of Pittsburgh. I don’t know how hard or easy their grading is in comparison, or if that even matters.

I am one. Brown has no +/- so it was actually a straight C on my transcript. You don’t need perfect grades, you need good grades. 100% do not retake, just dilute it out with other classes. Retaking is a lose-lose: anything less than an A is horrible and an A isn’t even that impressive because anyone should be able to get an A the 2nd time around.

I have no idea how Pitt’s orgo class is, but at Brown, the orgo class was so beyond the level of the MCAT that even after a multiple year hiatus between the two the MCAT orgo was child’s play. To boot: it’s only 25% of the BS section (pre 2015 MCAT) thus making it only 8% of the test.

I sincerely hope your MCAT date is only a couple months away, otherwise why are you taking section tests?

Thank you. I took a practice section to see if I lacked the knowledge to do well on it (to see if I need to retake it), but my MCAT isn’t until next year. I just wrapped up sophomore year.

I got a C first semester or Orgo and 2 B’s in biology- I was ranked as one of the top 266 Cardiologists in the state of Florida last year and top 2200 on the country (by USNWR- as reported by my peers)- guess I must have done something right.

My daughter got a C+ in Orgo II as well and she did fine in her admission cycle.
