Should I retake SAT for a better essay score?

I recently got my essay score back and I’m kind of worried about it. I got a 6/4/7 which adds up to a 17, and I’m worried about how this will affect my chances of acceptance into colleges like the ivy league. My SAT score was a 1540 (first time taking) but my analysis score on this essay is really low. Even though I know that many colleges place little importance on the essay, the admissions officer will still see my essay score since I took the SAT with essay. I’ve done some research and most say that it’s just extra info for comparing students if they’re having trouble deciding who to admit. A select few say that though it’s not that important, it is still seen by the admissions officers and could make them question why I got such a low score. I’m not sure what to think so I’d still like to hear from the experienced people on College Confidential and their advice on the matter.

Basically, I have two main questions.

  1. Should I retake the SAT just for the essay?
  2. Could my essay score be the factor that admissions officers use to take me out of the running in the admissions process?

I would not. Have you checked to see whether the schools you are interested in still even consider the writing score? Many (most?) don’t.
