I got a 30 (33E, 24M, 34R, 27S, 9W), and my top choice is Elon, followed by Emory and UNC Chapel Hill. I'm concerned about my math score, though I'm (obviously) not going into a mathematics- or science-related field. I know my scores are well in the range of all the schools, but to get into the honors program at Elon, I have to have a 30 or more. I hate taking tests and was hoping to avoid retesting... but I don't know! Help?

Are you talking about Elon Fellows? My D is accepted at Elon and is an alt for Business Fellows with an ACT of 28

Yes, the Honors Fellows at Elon - but the Honors one requires a 30 or above to apply.

Are you instate for Carolina? (If not, a 30 won’t cut it.) Emory’s mean is about a 31, so you are in-range, but its always better to be above the mean.

Test scores are much more heavily weighted for homeschoolers. Suggest you add some Subject Tests to bolster your app. Colleges are full of tests. Get used to it.

I know college is full of tests, and I understand that the scores are weighted more heavily for me. I’m going full time at a local community college for my senior year – I’ll be taking subject tests because it’s a requirement for homeschoolers applying to Emory. I live in Illinois, so thanks for that UNC tip. :)

IMO, Carolina is the most difficult public for admission OOS. Community college classes are fine, but you will only have one semester’s worth for an adcom to review. Also, make sure that you take transferable classes, i.e., those that would transfer for full credit to UICC. If they do not even transfer to your instate public Uni, a college like Emory would think that the juco course was not rigorous enough.

I’ve heard that about Carolina, so we’ll see what happens. Great, thank you very much for that info!! :)

You should also consider U of I, if you haven’t already. It’s probably your safety school, but since you live in state it’s going to be considerably inexpensive compared to the other schools. What’s your intended major?

My dad actually works at U of I, so I know all about it and would definitely get a reduced tuition. I’m going into journalism and/or photography, as well as possibly marketing and/or creative writing/English but I’d really rather not stay in state. I’ll look into it, but I kind of want to experience something different for college! :)
