should i retake the act or not?

Ok so I have taken the act 3 times. The first time I got a 28 (33 on English, 22 on math, 32 on reading, and 25 on science). The second time I got a 29 (31 on English, 25 on math, 30 on reading, and 28 on science). And then the third time I got a 28 again (31 on English, 24 on math, 31 on reading, and 26 on science). I know that a 29 is a good score, especially for the schools I'm planning on applying to. It's higher than all of their averages. But there's a few scholarships at some of the schools I'm applying to (St. Louis University, for example) where you need a 30 to qualify for the presidential scholarship. There are also a few other school where having a 30 or above would probably raise the amount of aid I was given. Since I really need a scholarship, I'm wondering if I should take it again. All I need is one point, but I don't know if it's worth it to take it again. So do you think it's worth it to retake it for the fourth time to try and get a 30? Or should I just stick with a 29 since I've already taken it 3 times? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!!!

hmm well a 29 is not ideal, but neither is taking it more than 3 times. look at the schools you are applying to. is 29 a competitive score? if not consider taking it again, or better yet, start fresh and take the SAT. hope this helped

My daughter is in almost the same situation…got a 29 (math score of 24 pulled it down) 29 is in the mid-50% of the schools she’s applying to, but needs a 31 for merit aid. She’s going to retake in September and try the SAT in Oct (though her PSAT math was even worse). We’re going with practice tests on the math and science, and if I can convince her to get some tutoring in math, I want her to do that.

You sound like you’re ready to study and take practice tests, so there’s nothing to lose by retaking. Have you practiced with the Real ACT book? Good luck…

Thanks. I hope your daughter does well also. I am ready to study and practice for it, but I’m just worried after already taking it 3 times that I’ll just end up with the same score and just be wasting my parents’ money. I think they do superscoring on the SAT (where they take different sections from different tests and add them together to get a higher score). Does anyone know if they do that on the ACT alos or is that just an SAT thing? Because I would have a 3o if I combined my subscores of 2 different tests…

anyone else? And thanks for all the other replies!!

Go take it again, there’s nothing to lose.
