I scored a 34(32 English, 36 Math, 33 Reading, 33 Science, 8 essay, 29 English+Writing)

I'm applying to top colleges such as Stanford and Yale and I'm wondering whether i should retake the ACT. I'm especially concerned about my low essay score and my low english+writing score. Thanks.

thats a hard one…ur composite score is pretty good though. I think you should probably retake it but just focus on ur essay this time to help bring that up

Go ahead. Note that while Stanford does not superscore the subsections of the ACT, they do take the highest writing and composite. If you get a 32 next time and a 10 on the writing, they will take the 34 and put it with the 10. It would be advantageous to retake it if you believe you can raise your writing score. An 8 won’t really hurt you, most schools 25th to 75th percentiles are 8 to 10, and not a lot of weight is placed on it.

^ wouldn’t it look bad if i scored worse the second time i took it?

if you are a well rounded student don’t worry about retaking
