Hi, I recently took the ACT as a sophomore and received a 34 (34.25 to be exact XD). I was wondering if I should retake it as a junior/senior to get a better score, or if a 34 was good enough. I am looking at some of the top colleges like the ivies and such if that helps. Thanks in advance!!!!!!!! :)

If you are targeting an Ivy or other top competitive college, it would pay to research how that school would view your second score. If the school you are most interested in calculates a superscore, or alternatively uses the top score, then you have nothing to lose (except the fee) and you can gain an edge if you improve. However, if the college only uses the most recent score, then you need to consider the possibility of backsliding.

Thanks for the response. As for the risk of backsliding, I believe it to be very low. That’s because I did not really study for this ACT as much as I will for any future test. Also, as embarrassing as it sounds, I blanked on how to do the punnett squares which cost me five questions on the science section. I guess what I’m trying to ask is if boosting my score to a 35 or 36 is worth the time it will take away from my EC’s?

A 34 and 36 do not make a huge difference; admissions wouldn’t solely choose an applicant over the other because of that perfect ACT score. I would suggest using your time on ECs or SAT subject tests (if the schools you’re thinking about require/recommend them)

I would definitely recommend to retake. A 1 point difference can make a big difference when you are competing for scholarships.

Hmmm… so many differing opinions, lol. I think I’ll just take it one more time at the start of my junior year so it doesn’t conflict with my ec’s (except Siemens). Thanks everyone for your input!
