Should I retake the ACT?

I took the ACT once in April and got a 31 (35/29/32/29) and retook it in June and got a 34 (35/32/34/33). I’m looking to apply to schools like Emory, Cornell, and Brown. I have strong ECs, but a 3.88 unweighted GPA (mostly APs). I was surprised when I got such a low score on math both times, since it is generally my best subject. I also only spent a week studying for the June ACT and didn’t finish the reading or science sections. I know a 34 is a good score, but I think a 35 or 36 would help compensate for my GPA being a bit on the lower side. Should I retake the ACT in September, or should I save my time and my money?

Save your time and money. A 34 is a great score and virtually indistinguishable from a 35 or 36. Focus on other things.

Your GPA and ACT are fine.

@childishrambino Sorry to ask this in your thread but could I ask you what you did to study for the ACT? I will be taking it later in high school and you got a really good score of 34 on it so f you could say what you did to study for it that would be awesome! Thanks and sorry for asking your thread

There is no significant difference between a 36 and a 34. Why would you take it again?

@PetEngineer I primarily used the Official ACT Prep Book (red book) and found some practice tests online provided by the ACT (just look up "free ACT practice tests, I used the prepscholar link which has links to plenty of practice tests). I also sat with a friend who got a 36, and he went over all the online practice tests with me and helped me correct the questions I got wrong. Be sure to time yourself, especially when doing reading and science. Keep a watch with you so you can check and see if you’re pacing yourself correctly. Good luck!

.

You have a great shot at Emory with those stats, a good shot at Cornell, and a decent shot at Brown. I think you’re good.

If I were you, I wouldn’t waste another dollar on ACT’s money train. You have a great score; any school that considers it inadequate is losing a fine prospect. Think about some other schools, as well. Good luck!

No need to retake a 34. Good luck,
