I just got my results back from the October ACT and I got a composite of 34 (34 English, 35 Math, 35 Reading, 33 Science). I didn’t really prepare for the time crunch, and I really think I can raise it to at least a 35 superscore.
Will taking the test one more time make any difference for top schools? For reference, I currently have an SAT superscore of 1510 (720 English, 790 Math) and I’m a first-generation White/Hispanic male planning to major in Computer Science.
I don’t think there is really a difference between 35 and 36, but I do think that the difference from 34 to 35 can be meaningful. I wouldn’t kill yourself to get the 35, but if you can do it with a minimal effort, it could pay off. depends, of course, on what your college goals are.
I cannot speak for the effects tests scores might have on scholarships; nevertheless, for admittance to (even) the top schools, I don’t think that you would need to retake the ACT, as you have thoroughly demonstrated your academic preparedness through your test scores and most likely your gpa.
As you have already identified that you were not prepared for the time crunch at your last ACT test, I guess that you had run out of time in the science section. As you know, one is allotted about 1 minute per ACT science question. A common strategy for ACT science is to skip reading the paragraph, go straight to the question and graphs, and then refer to the paragraph if necessary. Also practising with physical copies of the tests (that is, not online) also helps. Good luck if you are retaking the test. Do try to find time to enjoy your senior year.
