I am heading into my sophomore year of high school, and this is simply something about a mistake of a sort that I made in eighth grade with my geometry regent (I live in New York).
In short, I didn’t do too well on the regent and I was wondering if I should retake it this August, despite the fact that I took Algebra II as a freshman, meaning that I would be retaking it a year after I took my first geometry regent. I’m only considering this because I’m worried that not getting honor with advanced designation on all my regents will make it so I won’t be able to make it into an Ivy League school (which is what I’m hoping for) when I start applying to schools.
Here are my math regents grades + the final grades I got for each class.
Algebra I = 95 (regents), 98 (final)
Algebra II = 92 (regents), 97 (final)
Geometry = 88 (regents), 97 (final) (need a 90 for honors with advanced designation)
I’m still in high school myself, so take this with a grain of salt, but I heard that colleges don’t like seeing retakes on classes because they assume it took you 2 times to get it down. Plus, taking a class you already have mastery in (as shown by your final grade) would be increadably dull. But, if that would bump your grade up and allow you to receive special recognition for it, it might be worth it to you.
If you attend a NYC DOE school, the way that STARS is set up is that only your highest score on the regents is reported
I would not worry about retaking the geometry regents because:
You are already on track for an advanced regents diploma with Mastery in Mathematics
An advanced regents with honors is based on having an overall 90 **average** on the regents.
As long as your Math, ELA, SS 2 science regents + LOTE average out to a 90 you will be fine.
If you get at least an 85 (90 because you want honors) on 3 science regents, you would achieve an advanced regents with Mastery in math and science
Update: I was able to get ahold of my unofficial transcript, and it turns out all the regents scores are displayed there. I’ve heard that colleges wouldn’t really look at these scores, so it wouldn’t really affect my ability to get into better colleges, but what about certain prestigious summer programs (that I was planning to apply to) like the Garcia Summer Program at Stony Brook?
