Should I retake the SAT essay?

So I got an SAT Essay Score of 7 - 5 - 7 (Reading - Analysis - Writing). I got a 1460 on that SAT and am planning to take it again. Should I even take it again? I am going to pursue a STEM Degree and I am applying to:

  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • Cornell University
  • Carnegie Mellon
  • RPI
  • University of Michigan
  • Georgia Institute of Technology
  • University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
  • DigiPen Institute of Technology
  • Virginia Tech (Planning on applying to its Honors College

CMU and Michigan at the very least don’t even require the essay. Unless the rest say you must include I’d skip the essay altogether.

Also, a 1460 is a solid 33 (ACT equivalent). That’s a great score but your Math subscore is going to be crucial and some of those schools on your list are going to have very high verbal as well. You’ll want to hit at least the 25th percentile on ERW and Math separately, but 50th or higher would be better.

I got a 780 on Math with 680 on ERW

But I’m retaking it so it’ll probably be higher

OK. Good luck! Double check whether you need to bother with the essay. Most schools simply don’t consider it at all.
