I just got my scores back and I scored lower than my first time taking the SAT. My first score was a 2060 (CR 660 M 640 WR 760) and the second time I took it I got a 1980 (CR660 M 620 WR 700). I'm worried that the drop in my scores will look bad and I'm wondering if I should retake it a third time? If I retake it I will be taking it in October so I can focus on AP exams in June. Any advice is much appreciated. Thank You.

It depends on the school you want to attend. 2000+ should be good enough to get you into many Ivy League schools, and remember, they look at much more than test scores. Personally, I think the SAT is a tricky game that you can get tangled up in very quickly. Sometimes people will take it over and over and it becomes more of an OCD and a pride thing than anything else. Don’t be that person. So, take it again if your current scores are not sufficient enough to get you into the school(s) you are considering. Otherwise, leave it be. Don’t get more involved in it than you have to.

2000+ to get into Ivy-caliber schools? More like at least 2250 and 2300+ usually

And October is a long ways away. I’m assuming you’re a sophomore right now if you’re planning to take in Oct. again? You have a lot of time left, and there is a large gap between June and October to study and bring up your scores

And aren’t AP tests in may

I am a Junior and sorry I meant that I will be busy with AP exams in May and subject tests in June.

Don’t worry. You can take the test in Oct and still be on time for school applications (perhaps not for some early action though). The real question is whether the scores matched your expectation from practice. Just do more timed practice tests in the summer and see whether there is room for improvement. Based on that, you can tell whether you should retake it. For now, you should focus on AP and subject tests.
