Should I retake the SAT, or keep my score?

I took the december SAT and got a 1550. I’m aiming for colleges like Dartmouth, Georgetown, Harvard, Columbia, and Stanford.

  1. Is a 1550 a solid score when I’m aiming for colleges like the ones I listed? Or should I retake/ try the ACT? (I previously thought a 1550 was a pretty good score until I heard some of my friends talking about how for top colleges, the difference between a 1550 and a 1580+ is pretty significant, but I’m not sure how much I can believe them)

  2. How much does the SAT essay matter to colleges like the ones that I listed? I got a 17 on the essay, and I know that’s not an amazing score, but I know next to nothing about how much weight the SAT essay score carries for the colleges I’m aiming for.

Thanks for your help!

A 17 year old who has never been through the admissions process typically does not know how much s/he does not know. Don’t look to them for college admissions advice.

It’s an excellent score. Congrats and move on.

As significant as a pimple on an elephant’s butt.

Colleges that require the essay portion of the SAT have been dropping like flies, and none of the colleges you list require the essay. They can better judge your writing from the application essays.

For any colleges that still require the SAT or ACT essay, I liken the various components of the application to the Avengers; they are all important in their own way, but there’s a reason that the guy who shoots trick arrows and the dude that shrinks didn’t go up against Thanos. SAT/ACT essays represent Ant-Man. :slight_smile:

@skieurope Thanks!!
