Should I retake the SAT Subject Tests?

I got a 740 on Math II and 580 on Physics. My math score is much better but it was still only in the 57th percentile, and my physics score was only in the 22nd percentile.

My top choices are UCLA, USC, UC Berkeley, and UCSD and I plan to apply for either Civil/Structural Engineering, Mathematics, or Applied Mathematics. My other choices are UCI, Cal Poly SLO, and possibly UCR or Cal Poly Pomona for my safety schools. I do plan to apply to at least one or two out-of-state private universities but I’m not certain about which ones to apply to yet.

I know that the subject tests aren’t required at any of these schools, and I have a 32 on the ACT, so is that good enough for them? My top choices are very competitive for engineering majors especially so I’m not sure if my bad physics score would bring down my chances, especially since I also only got a 2 on the AP Physics 1 test.

I have one more chance to retake the subject tests in November, so should I take the opportunity to retake it?

Thank you!

Honestly, I would say to go for it! Especially if you’re applying engineering; SAT Subject Tests are something that could make you stand out if you perform really well on them. However, don’t rush things last minute. If you don’t feel comfortable cramming in one month, don’t take them. The tests can help, but they don’t necessarily hurt your application. Your math score is decent, maybe consider retaking physics?

Don’t go by percentiles for subject tests, just by the scores, as the pools are skewed. The math 2 test has the most skewed pool of all. I think if the subject tests are not required, just send anything that starts with a 7 and be done.

The question is what would you do with your time if you weren’t preparing for the November subject test? Visiting schools? Finishing essays? Applying for scholarships? Keeping your grades in in senior year AP classes? The fact that you got a 2 in AP Physics hints that 580 isn’t a fluke - it’s likely your actual skill level and it would take a lot of work to learn the material for a big bump. Are you sure there is nothing better to do with your time?
