Ok so I have taken it twice as of now:
first time: 2090/1400 (780m 620r 690w)
second time: 2170/1460 (760m 700r 710w)
My question is should I take it again in october? I know I can score an 800 in math if I work on it but I think my reading score has reached its maximum at a 700. Now if I get my math up 20 points and lets say improve my writing is that even worth it? I know many schools just throw out writing anyway.
I'm mainly applying to good state schools such as Michigan UNC UCLA etc all oos and was possibly interested in applying to maybe Vanderbilt or Northwestern or maybe even UPenn. I got 2 750s on my SAT 2s if that helps.
All input/suggestions will be appreciated!

I think you are fine academically. Focus on other things, such as essays, that will make you attractive to adcoms.

If you’re applying to UNC, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, and/or Upenn, then you should probably retake. Those scores are fine for Michigan and UCLA (And UNC if you live in North Carolina, but not if you’re out of state)

Thank you both! I realize the 3 are reaches and if I were to apply to either Vandy NW or Penn I would probably ed to only one of them to increase my chances. How much of an increase do you think would be necessary to be more competitive at these schools?

UNC, Vanderbilt, Northwestern and Penn superscore so your SAT score for them is 780m, 700r, and 710w or 2200, which is well within their ranges. Michigan and UCLA use that test with highest composite score and thus your score is the 2170 test which puts you in the upper 25% for both. Either way scores are well within those colleges’ ranges and raising math and writing is not going to make any real difference.

I’d have to agree with drusba. Focus on other areas of your application. Your test scores are fine

I think it’s usually beneficial to be within the upper ranges, esp. if you don’t have a hook. I’d retake, but it’s a good score

Is there anything to lose taking it again? If I do worse will it matter at all or be held against me?

No, there isn’t. Your scores are fine enough to get you considered, but they are not impressive

In my opinion, if you are counting on impressing adcoms with your standardized test scores, then it will be an uphill battle at Northwestern and Penn, no matter what your standardized test scores.

If you are going to study and are scoring at least 100 points better on practice tests I’d say retake it.

To be honest I’m mostly interested in the state schools, and decided I should apply to a couple of very elite schools just for the heck of it almost. Would increasing my SAT score by lets sat 60 points super score (2250) help my chances that much at Michigan, UCLA, etc ?
