Should I retake the SAT?

I took the SAT once last year. The October test to be exact. I scored a 2240 (750 math, 720 critical reading, and 770 writing 9 essay)

I always thought that my score was good enough so i never considered retaking it. Should I retake the SAT? Is it too late to retake it?

This is the list of schools I am applying to:
- UPenn
- Notre Dame
- UChicago
- UC Berkeley
- Northwestern University
- Cornell: Dyson
- Harvard
- Stanford
- Yale
- UCLA
- UCSD
- USC: Marshall
- Brown
- Columbia

Yes, your scores are good, but for the Ivy Leagues you need closer to an 800 for every subject. You ARE in their range, just in the lowere part of it. But awesome job! Those scores are great! I couldn’t get out of the 600s :P

It depends, are there any schools on that list that you REALLY want to go to? You’ll definitely get into a good amount of those schools, and probably at least one ivy. But retaking them and possibly scoring better couldn’t hurt :). My brother got waitlisted at Brown and Chicago and rejected at Harvard and Yale with a 2330 SAT score. However he had bad ECs and was Asian. He got accepted into UCLA, UCB, Dartmouth, Middlebury and Amherst (which he went to). Hope that helps a bit because his and your scores were very similar. That being said, it’s hard to say without knowing more about you. Best of luck!

Everyone has told me that my scores are good enough and I should focus on other aspects of my application

Well it really depends on what’s missing from you as a whole. If you have no ECs, then doing stuff like that would probably be better than studying a **** ton for SATs. On the other hand, if it’s just an essay you’re talking about, why not do both? If you don’t get into the colleges you want to get into, then you’re going to regret not retaking the SATs later in life when you know you can do better if you had put more time in it.

I think you did very well! Retake if you want, but you’re good man. If anyone on here wants to give me chances, just check my posts. Please… haha. I’m so scared I won’t get in anywhere.

So I’m getting mixed responses:

yeah definitely take it again. it can’t hurt. i wouldn’t stress over it though

There was a thread a couple of years ago where an MIT admissions officer said that if your scores on each section were over 700, he would not recommend taking the SATs again. (perhaps someone can find it).

If you’re even thinking of retaking, I have ask whether you have a good reason to think that you can raise the SAT-CR by at least 30 points.

This having been said – if you’re a senior, I wouldn’t worry about it – you’d have to cram for one of the tests, and then look school by school as to whether it will be considered. I think the impact of improvement would be marginal at best.

Bump10char

I really wouldn’t, spend time beefing up your essay.

Especially because 2012 October’s test was especially easy for Reading and Math. The curves were a bit harsher but you can certainly expect to do worse unless you do quite a bit of prep on the two sections.

I most likely wont study too hard for the SAT. Maybe a weekend at most. I just want to get a higher super score to better qualify me for the Ivies and top 10 schools.
Or is this just a myth? I heard that once I pass the academic screening (my SAT scores and GPA are on par) then they move on to the next section of evaluation (extracurriculars, awards, essays).
If this is the case, than a super strong SAT like a 2350 for example would be only marginally beneficial at best over a score like 2250.
