Should I retake the TOEFL?

I am an international from Italy. I'm looking to apply to very selective schools next fall. Thus far, my list includes Columbia, Amherst, and Bowdoin, and as you probably know, it is no easy feat to get into these schools. On my first try, I scored a 2100 on the SAT. I'll probably get 2200+ on my second try in October. My GPA is 3.95. My ECs are mediocre.

My question is, how important is the TOEFL? I just got my scores back: 117/120. I know I can score a 120 easily; I was very sleep deprived on test day, so I slurred my way through the speaking section. Is it worth it to take it again?

I say go ahead and retake it if you are 200% confident that you can get a 120 without any more studying. I will suggest that you study for the SAT and get that 2200+
This is basically the general rule for all standardized tests: Once you reach a certain level or score, there is no point in aiming for a perfect score.
For example, if you get a 2370 on SAT, there is absolutely no point spending another 2 months studying for a 2400. Those time should be spent on more meaningful activities (extracurricular, or other tests).

Good luck. :)

depends on if you have extra 160$. for example, i wouldnt because it is much money for me.

A 117? You don’t need to retake. But if you really desire a 120 then you might as well go ahead.

But will getting a 120 make a difference in college admissions, or would retaking be as silly as getting a 2370 and retaking for a 2400?

Retaking that TOEFL score is, to be extremely blunt, a total waste of time. The TOEFL is more of a pass/fail exam. As long as your score is past a certain point, it makes zero difference between a 114 and a 120. Don’t bother.

I think once a college sees that you have a great score (above 100/105) the it is useless. Your score is amazing to say the least, just remember that those 3 points coul’ve been one listening question that you selected wrongly and 2 reading questions that were weird.
I wouldn’t retake because it is super expensive but it’s up to you

Thanks everyone! I won’t retake.
