Should I retake?

Alright, so I've taken the SAT twice so far, once in my sophomore year and once in March, as a junior. Sophomore year I got 680 reading, 550 math, and 560 in writing. This year I got 680 in reading again, 510 in math, and 640 in writing. I ended up with a higher score overall, but I know a lot of colleges don't place to much weight on writing. Neither time I took it I studied that much, so my question is should I take the SAT again? Should I take a prep class? Or should I attempt to take the ACT? I don't want to both retake the SAT and take the ACT, because I also have to take two subject tests.

If you’re comfortable with the SAT format, stick with it. I’m never a fan of prepping for both tests unnecessarily. However, if you really think the ACT might be a better option for you, go ahead and take a full-length timed practice test (you can download one from the ACT website). If your ACT score is better than your last SAT, then switch.

Whichever you decide to go with, you absolutely need to do specific test prep. It sounds like you’ve gone into the SAT both times without much preparation, and that explains why your scores are essentially flat (w/ exception of writing). If you want to prep on your own, you can find a ton of tips on CC in the forums. But if you think you need more help, you’re much better off finding a tutor rather than taking a class. I’m currently a tutor, but I’ve taught classes at one of the major companies, and I can tell you that the potential for change with one-on-one help from a tutor is MUCH higher than any class. A few hours of tutoring can go a long way, so don’t waste your time or money on a class! You can also find help from tutors just to get a few questions answered that stump you. Good luck!

thank you!!
