Last year, I got a 35 on the June ACT (35/36/35/32) after having prepared for months; however, I didn't take Writing, so I was forced to retake the test this year. My April scores dropped significantly (35/36/31/32) since I took the test "cold," and I haven't received my writing scores yet. My main goal is to get a merit scholarship to Vanderbilt University; the school combines highest Composite with highest Writing in the application process, so I'd essentially have my 35 count for scholarship applications, but I don't know how much the low 34 would detriment my application. I'm thinking of retaking just to try for a 35 to go along with my essay, but I overloaded on test attempts my freshman year and am looking at a fifth attempt in June. I am a hooked student (URM); however, I don't know the school well enough to know what weight it places on ACT scores (holistic or highest) in scholarship applications. I appreciate all insight.

I don’t think the colleges would know how many times you’ve taken the ACT unless you send them all of your scores, but that’s beside the point. I think you should be fine, however, if you want to take the ACT again and think you can get a 35 then go for it.
