Should I rethink my ED for Columbia?

I'm not too sure if I should still ED Columbia, instead of, say, Rice, which has a higher acceptance rate than Columbia...

Basically, how low are my chances of getting into Columbia?

My stats!

SAT I: 2100 (taken twice) and taking 3rd time in Nov. (hopefully I can up it to 2200+)
SAT II: Math II (770-taken twice); USH (690- taken once); Bio (650, though I just retook it.. hoping for a 700+ (taken 3 times)).

My GPA is a 5.2 W; I'm not sure about my UW though, because my school hasn't released them yet.

Rank: 3/211

Essays: Should be really good.
Teacher/Counselor/Research Mentor Recs: Should be relatively good.

I'M ASIAN. :/ From a rural town, but my parents make a lot of $$...

ECs: went to a prestigious research camp this summer; Volunteering~100+ hrs.; NHS; Student Committee; Environment Awareness Club (Treasurer); Rotary Club; AP Commended Scholar; Piano (11 yrs.- got a national medal for the dedication); participated in Siemens/Intel this year, but I don't know how I did yet; I do play sports, but only at sports camps in the summer because my town lacks the funding to support sports...; Band; Regional participant in this Calculator competition; State participant and Regional winners for Spelling competition; local Art competition winner for like 3yrs. (?)

^For all the school clubs that I'm in, I've been in them for 4 yrs.

So... I'm not too sure at this point if I should ditch my dream school and aim lower. I seriously want to apply early to Columbia, but if my stats don't meet its standards, then why waste a perfectly good ED right? Someone slap me back into reality.

Thanks to all that help! :)

If there’s another school that you’re considering seriously enough that you would apply ED somewhere else, you may want to re-think it, regardless of your numbers. I think though, that if you’re serious about it, and it’s definitely the school for you, ED is your best shot. and you’ll never know if you dont try! so go for it! :]

I know! It’s always that “What if…?” question that lingers in the air when I think about myself at another college with a higher acceptance rate…

And, trust me, if I loved another college as much as I did Columbia, then I would ED it in a heartbeat… unless the acceptance rate is just as daunting as Columbia’s.

I don’t know, though, if I’ll even have a chance with my dismal SAT scores and my lackluster ECs. Boy am I optimistic today…haha

But I’m worried that admissions will take one look at my scores/ECs and then immediately think “not good enough.” Basically, I’m seriously hoping my essay turns out well to… balance… my application out. But even with some superamazinglyepic essay and ED, is Columbia still too far of a reach school?

I don’t know tooooo much about it. But i would say no. your class rank is very good, and your SATs are on the low side for columbia average, but they are by no means bad scores. I think it would be worth a shot. I know exactly what you mean about the what ifs though. Cornell is for me what Columbia is for you, and I want to apply ED but I just feel like there are SOOO many colleges that I havent seen! so how could i possibly know if its the best choice?!

It’s fine to use ED as a strategy. Columbia is very unlikely with current scores for an Asian applicant from NY. I would choose a more reasonable reach.

…oh… I’m not from NY, but yeah… reasonable or unreasonable. I really wanna try. But now that I think about it, it’s better to get into my second choice college than say my safety school right? lol

imo, go for it. i know i have a smaller shot at the school im eding to than the other schools i was considering. however, its my dream to go to my ed school and i have a realistic chance so im applying there because if i got in ed anywhere else, im always gonna be left with the “what if i applied to my top choice ed”
go for your columbia if its your dream school. you have a fighting chance. just try to throw in leadership

You shouldn’t be applying anywhere ED if it isn’t your first choice. Don’t settle with Early Decision. If you got in, you’d always wonder what would happen if you had applied to Columbia. Better to apply to Columbia ED, with slightly higher chances than RD, and then apply to the other schools RD.

(I’m in the same boat as you. I’m applying ED to Columbia, but for awhile I was tempted to apply ED to Barnard (like it as much). I’m ending up applying ED to Columbia for the financial aid.)

erk. But as much as I heartt Columbia, and as much as I’d love to get accepted and go there, my scores leave a whole ton to be desired for… so wouldn’t it be much more practical to apply somewhere where the acceptance rate ISN’T below 20%? lol

I don’t know… I’ll always wonder what if… but I think that’s better than not getting into my second- choice college because I wasted my ED on Columbia…

fjdklsa ohwelll lol. One month to decide! joyyy :D

@2015 I don’t even seriously think I have a realistic chance :open_mouth: thus my thread on here hahah

@Nonsensical But my other colleges that I want to apply to have low acceptance rates too, though not as low as Columbia’s… so if I apply RD to my other colleges… I won’t have much of a chance of gettingin. But if I apply ED to one of those other colleges with a higher acceptance rate than Columbia’s, then I have a better chance at getting in than if I applied to Columbia… and so I’ll settle for a college, but at least I’ll go to one of the colleges I WANTED to go to; instead of settling for a college I didn’t want to go to because I got rejected from the other selective colleges I RD. You can tell that most of my colleges are reaches. But I was hoping to use ED as an advantage so that I could get into one of my reaches (yay!).

oh the complications of college apps. haha
