Hello everyone, I would like to know if I reveal on my common app that i come from a disadvantaged background(my father was mentally and physically ill and we lost him recently and my mom had to work really hard to make a living and so on), might it happen that if the adm officer supposes i will need a lot of fin aid, they will look at my application not favorably? I am applying to school that are all need blind for internationals, Dartmouth ED, Princeton, Yale, Williams, Amherst.
Thanks in advance, PLEASE help.

~ goharik19, it may increase your chance since now these institutes are more interested in deprived students who tried their best in high school despite all misfortunes. Didn’t you check this website? Please follow this link

Thanks a lot:))))

definitely mention it in an essay or additional information

In general I doubt if it will make much difference but if you can do it skillfully without sounding too self pitiful it may be worth a shot.

As long as you don’t sound like you’re trying to garner extra sympathy, you’ll be fine. I would still mention it, so that they can understand your whole family situation. I don’t know if you should do it in an essay, maybe in the additional info section?

Thanks everyone. Is it a good idea to have my family story written in one of my recommendation letters? One of my teachers knows the story, maybe she will just mention about it? But yes, I do not want to elaborate too much on it. And I would not like it in my rec letter too, maybe just a couple sentences in the rec letter?
Thanks:)

use ur disadvantage without sounding as if ur trying to use it.
