Hi, I am an international transfer student and have applied to Caltech, Duke, and Umich among others. Today I just found to be acepted to Umich(:-)), and they require a reply and the enrollment deposit by May 1, if I wish to enroll. However Caltech and Duke both release their decision by mid May.
So if I choose to enroll Umich then I cant go to Caltech even Caltech accept me later?
If you are me, could you go Umich or reject the admission hoping for Caltech? Or is there a better option to perserve both?
Thanks for any input.

Can’t you put in the deposit to reserve your spot at UMich? And then if you get into Caltech or Duke later you can enroll there and lose the $500 deposit. Small price to pay in my opinion.

mmm…
What I doubt is if I pay the deposit implies my aceptance of admission so I must enroll or I could not enroll and just lose the money?

Congrats on UMich! What a great school!
What you would have to do is send your your deposit to UMich. You don’t have to enroll at the school, you just have to secure your spot.
This is true for all transfer applicants as unlike freshman admissions, there is no set date. You do lose money in the process, but if you aren’t 100% sure about Duke or Caltech, you need to put down the money to reserve your spot somewhere. Sometimes you can call the school and let them know that you are waiting on another admission and sometimes they are nice - but very rarely.
Paying a deposit does not imply acceptance of admission. You can ALWAYS revoke your admission until classes start (some schools I think you can actually do it after then). You don’t have to worry about not being able to accept CalTech or Duke because as soon as you find out, you can revoke UMich and accept one of the two. It really just requires calling a transfer admissions counselor, and getting to her in writing that you are revoking your admission because you have been accepted to such and such school.

However, I would encourage you to try and let UMich know that you are revoking admission as soon as you know your decision because there are many students on wait lists that are waiting for your spot.

Good luck on Caltech and Duke and please let us know what happens!
