Should I Run for Student Council?

Read the above. Lets see... I'm cool (?), fairly smart (?) and helpful (No). The Student Council
screens all the club applications at my school. Hopefully, since I'll try to start my own clubs, it could help out that I have student council status. However, I'm shy, and if there is any speaking involved...

Do you guys think I should try?

Yeah, go for it! I'm a student council president at my school, and it has been one of the best decisions I've made. There are so many perks to being an officer that its not worth not to try. Sure its a lot of work, but you're gonna end up doing a lot of work anyway in life so why not give it a shot.

I see. I may, but the problem is -
Don't people have to actually like you? :D

By no means am I saying you are not likeable. I am just under the impression that the more "popluar" kids have much better chances.

what are your chances of winning? im not saying to run only if youre guaranteed a win, but run for something people could see you doing and doing well. otherwise, you should totally do it.

.-_-.

the hard part (atleast for me) is when you realize you have not seen, let alone know, all the kids in your grade. my school has 500+ students per grade. i ran for my class treasurer in 10th grade and got killed because i only knew maybe 300 kids at most, and not all were voting for me.

Yay! Stud Co! Go for it, because Stud Co is super fun! I hope so, anyway...

My family and I were just discussing how I need to get us a paper shredder, robes, and powdered wigs for the stud co room.

I don't know that many people, I'm a freshman. I pretty much know some of the 9th graders and thats it. Maybe I'll try out for paper shredder next year.

At my school you only vote for kids in your grade (excluding the exec board), so only knowing kids in your grade shouldn't matter.

Ah, I see. I probably won't make anywhere near Pres. this year, but w/e. At least I'll have an extracurricular activity other than slitting my wrists.

But slitting wrists is just oh so much fun, why in the world would you want to stop?

I wouldn't; thats why it's my main EC.

Anyway, how does running for SCo work? Sending out fliers? Associating with human beings?

government is overrated

I myself don't like stu. co. much, but some people do; maybe you'll be one of the ones who do.

Amyways, make posters and post them around your school! Don't make generic "Vote for ChaosTheory" ones, though. Instead make something funny, that people will remember, and thus will remember you. There are tons of people who don't know any of the candidates, so you could win them over.

I'm excited. I like to be in control of things.

I'm excited aswell :)

I doubt you'll make President since you're a freshman. You don't know anyone else in the school. Other Juniors, Sophmores and seniors are running. I don't think you are even allowed to run yet and you'll have no chance because they know so many people in the school. The people that are running have already impacted the school in some way.

No, only Sophomores are running. It's a brand new school; SCo for the first time.

If you're interested in being on student council, run.

The advantages:
Whether you win or lose;

You'll get to know more people and lots more students and teachers will know you. This will lead to opportunities in terms of friendships and other activities such as being nominated for leadership programs, scholarships, etc.

You'll learn a lot about politics and marketing.

You'll develop new skills including public speaking. Incidentally, most people don't like to do public speaking. Most Americans also describe themselves as shy. The secret with becoming comfortable with public speaking is doing it. The more practice you get, the more comfortable you'll be and the better you'll be at it.

If you do win:
You'll get an opportunity to make a difference in your community.
Especially if you take advantage of your position and really do some projects, colleges and scholarship committees and potential employers will be impressed.

You may be very worried about what will happen if you lose. You'll be disappointed, but more than likely, you'll have more opportunities and skills than you did before, so even if you lose, you'll still be ahead of where you are now.

Thank you for your advice.
This has definitely given me more confidence. Heck, I just went out and got a haircut.

Yes, Americans. Me a resident yes - one, not. :)

The thing is you never took High School classes there so I'm guessing you don't know any sophmores. There are probably freshmen that won't vote for you and sophmore definitely won't vote for a freshmen over a sophmore. Plus there are always other Freshmen who are better candidates than you.
