Pomona or Claremont McKenna could be a compromise–LACs that rank very highly, are close to home, and have no-loan policies. Be warned, though, that while their acceptance rates are higher than Stanford’s, the number of new admits is much smaller. (My son got into Stanford, but rejected by both Pomona and CMC.)
