I am an international student who will attend a community college in the US this fall. I am going to graduate from high school with the 3.0ish gpa and have completed IGCSE and some A/As level ( UK education) however the test result aren’t great. I also have a decent high school involvement with sport teams and the student government.
Since I am attending a community college, I want to self-study AP classes that are closely related to the community college courses that I am taking. These include Calculus BC,Environmental Science,Macroeconomics,Microeconomics, Government & Politics - US and English Language and Composition. Not only that it is similar to the community college, some of which are like the UK education that I used to study.
Now then should I take it to boost my transfer chances out of a community college in my second year to a mid-high tier university ? or should I just focus on the community college ?
hmmm… well, people tend to enroll in AP classes and take the tests to earn credit for the college courses that correlate with said classes. so, unless i’m missing something, won’t you already have credit for the classes you’ll be self-studying by the time you transfer?
First learn if self studying AP as a college freshman would even count for transfer credit.
I doubt it would get you any closer to transfer success. They’re high school courses and you could take them fir real at your present college. Self study defeats the point of an actual class. Sure, you think you can somehow jump ahead. Not this way.
You probably should ask either your guidance counselor at CC, or ask admissions at a university that might be of interest to you in the future, or both. However, my understanding is that a community college course is considered to be equivalent to a university course, so that you get university credit for your CC courses without taking AP tests, assuming that you do well in CC.
There are universities that you can get into with a 3.0. However, you will have significantly more opportunities for university admissions and possibly financial aid if you can get your GPA up significantly.
Thus I am inclined to think that you should focus on improving your GPA, rather than taking AP tests.
I believe that you would have to find a high school that would even let you sit for the exam. Then it would be up to each college to determine if they are willing to accept them.
