Reasons:
My schedule is full of other AP Classes
I had the AP Chem teacher as a PAP Chemistry teacher and that was....interesting
I'm not sure if I'll have transportation access to my local community college.

Is it virtually IMPOSSIBLE to get at least a 4 (much less a 5) regardless of whether you self studied or not? (I have a rudimentary chemistry background, considering how terribly my year in PAP Chemistry went)

To those of you that did self-study the exam and did reasonably well, what is your advice on how to go about self studying?

I’m self studying it as my school does not offer it (im a senior now). I took honors chem last year with a good teacher that covered topics very in-depth but didn’t bother covering other topics at all. My self-study has been reasonable and not too difficult. I’m just doing chapters in my textbook. I’ve done Kinetics, Thermochemistry, and Thermodynamics so far. I plan on getting 5 Steps to a 5 review book for this (sampled it online. its really useful). Imma finish up the other important chapters through the course of the year. To be painfully honest, I would get a 4 on this if not a 5 with the knowledge I have at this moment. If you don’t have a strong chemistry background, I would work super hard if you want a 4 or 5. It is NOT impossible.

To get a 5 you need around 100/150 or 67%.
To get a 4 you need around 81/150 or 54%.

Good luck.

Yes you should always self-study as much ap exams as you can handle.

Wait…what would one need to receive on the free response section? ( IF there is one)

One should never self-study AP Chemistry. AP Chemistry is best taught by an instructor. I’m in AP Chemistry now, and it’s difficult, it gets harder and harder. The exam is brutal and requires a lot of effort. I wouldn’t waste my time.

It is brutal for people that don’t naturally enjoy the physical sciences.

Awesome girl: I would say that you should probably try to find a Facebook AP Chem study group. You can’t self study AP Chem. Well you could, but it would be extremely difficult. My DD, had AP Chem last year. The teacher included study sessions on Saturdays and Sundays because there was so much material to cover. (I carried lots of pizza on those weekends).

My daughter did well on her AP test, but if it weren’t for those study sessions, with 60 classmates or so, on the weekends, she doesn’t think she would have performed so well.

She had to take a basic Chem course at her UC this quarter and is doing well (500 students).

She is grateful that she did well in her AP Chem class and test last year because it really helped her know how to study this material. She says, currently, most of her classmates are not doing well and the professor has had to curve his tests and add office hours.
