I'm applying to 10 schools, and while several require at least one subject test, only two of them require two. I took Literature and US History (I'm planning on an English major).

I scored a 740 on Literature and I've sent that to all of my schools. I sent the US History score to the two universities that require two subject tests, but the score is eminently average: 610 (the average score I looked up for the US History SAT II is 608). Should I bother sending this score to my other schools? All of them are competitive - in fact, I'm kind of nervous that this score may hurt my chances at the two schools that required I send it (CMU and Tufts).

Are you planning on retaking the test? If you are not retaking and you don’t send the score then you would not be fulfulling the admission requirements of the schools that need two SAT II.

I would retake the test if I knew for sure I’d do better and just send that to the schools that require two. But that’s just me. I’m not really a score choice type person. Sending it or not is up to you if you plan to retake the test. ^_^

^ Thanks! Just to clarify, I am not retaking the test - lack of time, unfortunately and I’ve sent the score to the two schools that require both the subject tests. I’m waffling, leaning towards no, on sending both scores to the rest of my schools as opposed to just sticking with the Lit score. My question is essentially: if a subject test is not required and the score is average, is it beneficial in any way to send it?

(Additionally, if it IS required, does an average score hurt my chances for admission at a competitive school or is it basically acknowledged and disregarded? As I mentioned, US History is not my intended major.)

I won’t send it to the schools that don’t require it. About admissions at a competitive school, I wish I could help you out but I really don’t know much about US college admissions and how they make their decisions. I’m international :)

However I don’t think the score would be disregarded since two SAT II tests are required regardless of your intended major. Since you do not have the time to do anything about this score, you’d have to do your best to present the rest of your application positively. Make sure to highlight what you can offer schools and what makes you unique in your essays without stating it literally and show sort of mature thinking by the way you analyse your experieces in essays. Have fun with your appications! You are talking about yourself after all.
