Last year I made an audition CD for a summer music school- just wondering if it would be wise to send it with my application. I'm not planning to major in music, but piano is an important part of my life.

Thanks…wow this sounds complicated…I think I got that as long as I’m well above average it couldn’t hurt to submit a CD, is that correct?

It is a bit complicated, and there are no easy answers.

Parameters are school specific. Some want supps, some don’t. Submission guidelines vary. Can you reasonably assess your talent among a national and international pool of applicants? Is it average, above average, or on a level that would be competitive within the top conservatory level programs in the country? Realize that some applicants (virtually anywhere) may have already played semi-professionally, or professionally, bagged a few significant competition win.

There is an incredible level of talent out there, many who will not be music majors. If you have valid professional input assessing your skill level, or have experiences that allow you to view your talents in a regional or national peer group, it makes the call a bit easier.

Remember, proficiency does not equal mastery, and mastery is not artistry.

If you are “above average”, it usually cannot hurt at many schools, particularly at smaller programs, or schools not well known for music. It may be a data point, it may not. It may even be worth a scholarship. At some schools, your talent may be well below the bar, even for non music majors.
