I’m applying restrictive early action to Yale, which requires all scores to be sent in.
My ACT with writing score is 33, so I’m sending that in.
For my SAT, I can send in my subject tests (740 on Biology and 720 on Math), but I had a really rough test on the SAT exam (I got a 1410 with 750 in math and 660 on english/reading) that is way below average at Yale.
Do you think I should even send in my SAT scores? Subject tests are recommended but mine aren’t particularly outstanding and my SAT may hinder my chances.
ANOTHER QUESTION: Do my scores have to be received before the November 1st deadline, or do I only have to submit my scores before then, because I would have to rush my scores to get it there before the deadline.
Test scores can arrive after Nov 1 and if you send them regular delivery by early Nov you will be fine. (Yale even takes Nov test scores for EA.) You could send test scores now – if they arrive before your application, they will be matched with the application when it arrives.
As to what Yale’s “all scores” rule actually requires: you can send either all SAT’s or all ACT’s. And you can send whatever SAT subject tests you want to send, and you do not have to send the SAT if you send the subject tests. In other words, you could send your ACT and the two subject tests and fully comply with Yale’s all scores rule. You’re subject test scores are OK and I would send at least those with the ACT.
Yale’s rule allows you to exclude the SAT test scores when sending the subject tests if you are providing all ACTs rather than all SATs. When you exercise score choice, College Board provides nothing to a college to even indicate you registered for a test that is withheld.
That does not completely rule out colleges from learning your SAT score. You have to check what your high school puts on your official transcript that is sent to colleges because many put all your test scores on it in addition to all your course grades. If your high school does so, you can request it to send a transcript without test scores but it is not required to comply with that request, so it depend simply on your school. moreover, the prices of getting something excluded that is usually provided on a transcript could delay the submission of the transcript.
As to whether it makes any difference if you submit both SAT and ACT to Yale, it claims, like other colleges do, that it will use that test which is considered better for you in determining admission.
