If I am applying to some of the country’s top colleges, should I even bother sending my AP scores? I only have two 3s, one 4 and another 4 as a subscore. I expect that the other applicants to these schools will have higher scores (4s and 5s), so it will put me at a disadvantage.

I do not recommend sending these scores.

I don't think you need to send them until you're actually going to the school and you can get college credit for APs.

Don't send them. AP scores are not important anyway compared to everything else. At most, they count as one grade in one class, albeit a class that is supposed to be harder. If you get the AP Scholars Award in the mail, put that down in the awards section, and they will see that you took the exams.

Don't send them if your other scores position you much higher.

Some schools (like Harvard, and maybe MIT) actually ask you to self-report AP and IB scores. They say it is not necessary to send an official report, but I do believe that they are one small part in admission (especially if you want to get in more b/c of academic merit). If you lie, and get accepted and enroll, I heard that sometimes they check your scores with what you reported.

Thanks to all for your advise.

TheDesiBoi: For the schools that ask you to report AP and IB scores, would it be bad if I just left that section blank?

Hmm... this wouldn't have been a problem if I'd gotten an 5s.

bump...I'm wondering the answer to the last question as well.
