Should I send my mid-term report with a C ?

Hi,

As I am applying for a couple of competitive schools (Ivies and other schools), I wonder does having a C on my mid-term report grade will fatally hurt my chance of being admitted?

I have a 4.0 GPA last semester and this semester I am taking full number of classes that my university allows per semester and all of them are really challenging. Yet this term I am taking computer science class and I had never coded in my life so I struggled a lot, leading to a C in my mid-term report.

I am applying for engineering major.
So my question is does having a C on my computer science hurt my chance of being admitted?
Should I report the mid-term without the CS grade?
Or should I keep it until around late March when I got another grade for Comp Sci which I hope will improve my chance to a B. Does that sound the best solution?

I am really nervous about this guys :frowning:

I am in a similar position as you, I have 5 classes and As in all but a C+ in one. Can’t afford the course materials so I can’t turn in a good 1/2 of the homework/out of class assignments. My professor agreed to find an extra booklet since we have to rip out pages and turn them in + give me credit retroactively for the missed assignments + require extra work to “make it fair” but in the meantime my grade suffers since midterms are in.

@NovusCannis Hi,

Although I have not talked to any admission office, I feel like the best solution now for both of us is to find a way to improve our grade on that subject, perhaps through the score from an incoming assignment?

I agree. That C+ for me is set in stone, the Midterm report is not going to be modified so I have to weigh whether or not I want to send it, but I really have to since I need it to make the case of my overall story of improvement. I know I will finish the class with an A so all we can really do is work hard to make sure we finish with that A or even A- so that it doesn’t hit our GPA and doesn’t raise questions about whether we can handle the courseload.

There’s three scenarios that can happen if you wait till late March.

  1. take test and increase the C to a better grade
  2. still remain a C
  3. do worse on the second test and you could be sending in the D/F grade

3 is more probable than the other two options.

Work hard to get a B or withdraw from the course, challenge the course again in the next semester. If your school does replace the W with the new grade.

For universities that require mid-term reports, you will be expected to submit them, regardless of the grades.

As for the answer to your question: it depends. Computer science is closely related enough to major that a C on a mid-term report may raise some eyebrows. However, if all of other mid-term grades are still stellar, I can see them overlooking this.

Hi,
Do you think I should drop the class to keep the stellar mid-year report?

Depends on amount of credits you have.

Colleges want to see a solid credit load (16+ for semester and 12+ for quarters) if you go below that it wouldnt look so good
