Should I send my SAT1 score?

I'm an international students from Asia.

Smith comes out as my most favorite and I'll apply ED1 to Smith. However, my SAT1 score in October is only 1950 (low compared to other Asia applicants). Should I send this SAT1 score?

I will send my SAT1 score in November (hope it is better). I have emailed Smith and they said "If your SAT score is received during the window of review, they will certainly be considered." So I wonder whether I should send both October and November scores or only the November one? Does this October score benefit or hurt my chance (chance of admission and chance of receiving aid)?

My other scores are much better (SAT2: M1-800 M2-800 PH-760 and GPA: 9.4/10 in my country).

What are the individual scores on your SAT1?
According to the most recent numbers I see, the middle 50% of enrolled Smith freshmen who submitted scores is:
610-720 for CR;
610-730 for Math,
and 630-730 for Writing.
If any of your scores is much below those then I would just send your outstanding SATIIs. Take advantage of the fact that Smith is truly test optional.

Good luck to you. My daughter is applying ED to Smith as well :)

OP and @ClubAcres‌ - Smith College requires International Students to send in their SAT scores. (I only know that its mandatory. I dont have good knowledge on this issue but I’m pretty sure they ask for SAT1 but don’t require SAT2 for internationals.) As for Citizens and Permanent Residents, Smith is test optional.
OP:
Will you be applying for financial aid? Your SAT 2 scores seem really good so I suggest sending those in. As for November scores, when do they get released? If they come out in time for 15th Nov, that would be much simpler. however, with your current situation, maybe you could send in your October as well as November scores? (Talk to others regarding this matter as I can’t say for sure what the best plan of action would be). Since you will be assessed along with the International applicants pool, competition might be tough. But your school transcript plays an important role along with your essay. So I’d suggest focusing on those and talking to others regarding your SAT1 scores.

I’ll be applying ED to Smith as well and I have the same scores as you. However, I’m not an international student so Smith is test optional for me. What were your individual section scores?
Mine were:
CR: 650
Math: 600
Writing: 700

Standardized tests (SAT I, ACT, TOEFL or IELTS) are required for international citizens. The SAT I or ACT is required for students being instructed in English. The TOEFL or IELTS is required for students being instructed in a language other than English. SAT II subject tests are optional.

The average TOEFL score for admitted students is 98. We recommend that students attain a total band score of 7.0 on the IELTS

sorry for my incorrect info to the OP

Thank you all !!!

From Smith website: "SAT I or ACT scores are optional for US Citizens and US permanent residents. Standardized tests (SAT I, ACT, TOEFL, or IELTS) are required for international citizens. The SAT I or ACT is required for students being instructed in English. The TOEFL is required for students being instructed in a language other than English.

International students who are attending high school in the U.S. must submit SAT I or ACT scores."

I’m not instructed in English. So, as I understand, Smith College requires an International Student as me to send in my Toefl score and SAT1 is optional :-?

I understand that with a test-optional school as Smith, I still should submit SAT1 score because I see most Smith’s applicants do. But my individual section scores are CR 530, M740, W680. My CR score is bad.

Hope that my Nov SAT will be better, but I wonder whether I should submit the Oct SAT or not.

@Huyenk From what I read through the website, SAT 1 is mandatory for students and TOEFL is mandatory for students that are not instructed in English. From what I understand, SAT1 is optional only for US citizens and Permanent Residents. I’m pretty sure about this because initially, I’d emailed the college asking whether SAT1 was required for PRs living outside of the US. (The answer was that except US citizens and PRs living anywhere in the world, SAT1 is mandatory).

I do recommend emailing them just to make sure.

Your Math score is amazing! :open_mouth: If only I’d gotten something like that in Math haha.

I’d recommend sending the October score if incase SAT1 is indeed mandatory for international students. I also recommend emailing Smith and asking if (incase you decide to send in November scores instead) your November scores will reach them in time to be considered for the admission process.

Unless it changed after I applied, I’m pretty sure the SAT1 score is not mandatory for internationals. I don’t think it’s a very important part of the process. If you can raise that CR score to 600, you should definitely send it, since your math is great. I think they might be more lenient with internationals whose first language isn’t English. I know students with similar CR/WR scores (but they weren’t asking for FA, so that does change things…). Some international students apparently got a note in a package you get after enrolling suggesting you take ENG118 instead of a first-year seminar, and I would guess it has something to do with test scores, but to be honest I’m not really sure, since I didn’t get the note (and I’d have no way of knowing either way).

Now, I’m not really sure if the October score would hurt you. Smith doesn’t pay too much attention to test scores, and the TOEFL is just a cut-off to make sure your English is good enough for college in the US, but since it’s below the average by quite a bit, maybe you shouldn’t send it. It might affect your chances of getting accepted, I wouldn’t be sure, but not your chances of getting aid. Aid is independent of test scores, if they decide to accept you, Smith covers full need as they calculated. Needing aid, however, is something that does affect your chances of admission, but you probably already knew that.

If you’re sure you’ll improve your November score, but are worried about it not getting there on time, perhaps you could apply EDII, but I’m not sure if that changes anything. Some schools seem defer more students on one round, but since Smith doesn’t release data on international students acceptance rate (not anything specific), I’m not sure if that’s the case at Smith. I would guess not? But I truly have no way of knowing.

Oh, if SAT1 is optional, sorry for providing incorrect information! I definitely recommend writing to Smith about this.
._.

10 char

Thank all ^^!

Are SAT or ACT scores required?
SAT I or ACT scores are optional for U.S. Citizens and U.S. permanent residents. International students who are attending high school in the U.S. must submit SAT I or ACT scores. SAT II subject tests are optional for any applicant.

We accept official scores that are listed on the high school transcript or sent from the testing agency. Scores listed on the Common Application are considered self-reported and will be reviewed by the admission committee.
