And even if I only send the ACT, do I have to list my SAT scores on college apps (UCs/CSUs)? I also plan on retaking the ACT (aiming for a 30+), so do I have to indicate that on college apps as well?

It depends on the school. If you are considering very selective schools you should try to hide that sat score. The 29 should be sufficient. And no you do not need to to put the SAT score I the common app

I called a UC admissions rep a few days ago and he told me it can only help if I list both, because they’ll look at the highest scores from each section of both tests. However, I believe all sections in my ACT are higher than those in my SAT, so should I just list and send that? I already sent my ACT, but haven’t sent my UC applications yet (will do that very soon).

I guess what I’m mainly asking is, will it hurt me if I don’t list and send my SAT score? It’s listed in my transcripts, so if colleges see it on there but then see I didn’t list it on my application, will that look bad? I would also hate to spend money sending my SAT if I don’t need to, and I always hear of people (on CC) that took both tests, but only listed and sent the one they scored higher on.

It all depends on the school. Some allow both, some require one or the other, some require SAT but also consider ACT. Find out for each school individually, or to be safe, send all of it. Either way the SAT score won’t hurt you, but it won’t help either so it all depends on what test the schools want.

In my daughters case, for her UC applications, we decided to send them both as she took the ACT only one time, and we thought it might look funny to just send in a one time test score only. So she also sent her SAT scores, as they were similar to the ACT, and like your mom said, we thought it would look well-rounded. Certainly the cost and hassle are something that you have to consider as well

The difference isn’t quite as big as you initially indicated but still the ACT score is comparatively stronger. (And, BTW, all colleges accept both the ACT and the SAT and none require both.)

My slight inclination is to recommend you send both simply to be consistent with your transcripts. Some considerations that could tip my recommendations the other way:

– The cost of sending scores truly is a financial burden to your family (but, if so, you can probably get a cost waiver).

– You have not already sent transcripts and can get the SAT scores removed from your transcript on request (which you should be able to do since they are your scores, not your school’s, but the hassle of doing this might not be worth it).

Your transcript and activities will demonstrate your “well-roundedness”. Having both scores will have no impact on this.

Finally, whatever you decide to do, do it and stop thinking about it. This really is a nearly insignificant issue in the bigger picture of your admission decisions.
