Should I skip pre-Calc?

I'm a sophomore this year and my schedule for next year looks like this (as of now):

AP Eng Lang
APUSH
Physics
Honors Spanish 3
AP Comp Sci

My school offers a Pre-Calc course, and that should be the standard class for me to take next year since i'm in Algebra 2 right now. but, i just don't feel like taking a whole year to just prepare for AP Calc AB.

Well, do you know your trig and some basic calculus? Everyone’s different and every school is different, so ask your upperclassmen for theiropinions.

take precalc

what about junior? should i skip?

Take pre-calc, it is a nice review…

Why don’t you self-study trig and other topics over the summer and go straight to AP Calc. That is a great option and you’ll be able to take more math classes on your senior year.

yeah I will self study the 3 chapters that would be left by the end of this year from Algebra 2, try so hard to finish as well precalc over the summer… then move on to AP Calc in senior year… U think it’s doable?

And I’m sorry that this thread took a turn you probably did want orangemaple…

I think it depends on you. If you read the precalc lessons and feel you cn go through them through the summer or sth alone, that would be great… If you feel after that summer that you need the class, take it! you still have a long way ahead! It’s ppl like me who should feel bad… lol :P

Hope that helps :D

Btw, I meant by “what about junior?” that I AM A JUNIOR… lol… that’s why I’m stressing you know. I WANNA take calcAP, but didn’t know if I could you know…

take pre calc or a summer course

Does your school allow you to skip? Some schools require kids to take a specific math path and don’t even allow summer course substitution. Perhaps you can check with your counselor and also talk with your current math teacher for feedback. They may allow you to skip if your current math grade is high enough. What grade are you getting in Algebra 2?

despite it’s name, precalc isn’t so much preperaration for calc as it is a whole different math syllabus. I heard the name “precalc” and thought the same thing you did, but if it was only about calc prep, they wouldn’t have a whole year devoted to it.

take the class

@2200andbeyond, it’s fine :)

I’m thinking of this, ask my current algebra teacher and counselor, then if I choose to skip, self-study over the summer.

Check the curriculum for your school’s calculus course. It probably isn’t just pre-calc prep. There’s normally more in there that you’ll need to know.

Much as I dislike Pre-Calc, if you’re in Alg II as a freshman then it will be cakewalk for you. Almost all review and it will definitely prep you for calc
