My schedule won't work with orchestra unless I drop an AP class junior and senior year. :( I absolutely love orchestra, but I also really, really want to take as many AP classes as possible. They're both important to me, so now it's really just a question of what will look better on my college application. So will it look better with 4 years of varsity orchestra, or 12 APs (as opposed to 10)? I'll still be playing in my city youth orchestra and church orchestra regardless.

Also, the APs are very important for my class rank. I could possibly get into the top 5 of my class with the extra grade weight from APs. My rank right now is in the top 20's. On the other hand, my ECs are pretty weak. Orchestra, Latin (NJCL, national/state competitions, NLE, etc), and maybe UIL are the only things I've truly invested myself in and am strong in.

So I don't know what to do!! D: Opinions?

drop something else? You must have a class thats not AP besides ochestra… and if you cant drop it just bump it up to AP (like maybe you have to take earth and enviormental sciences this year, take AP instead of honors). I would be taking the extra APs to higher your rank and GPA (as long as your sure you can manage As) .

Hmm. and about your ECs, do some internships over the summer/volunteering. Possibly at a local music school or something. What are you majoring in, music? If so, definitely do what I previously suggested. If not… and you’re majoring in something like medicine, start interning/volunteering at hospitals, if its psychology you could possibly start working with autistic kids or something. Really try to get in some 100+ volunteer hours towards one thing/genre of things, and get into 1 or 2 leadership positions in some clubs at your school.

We’re required to take at least one medical science elective every year and they take up two class periods, so I only have room for either another elective (orchestra) or an extra AP. The rest of my classes are AP core classes and Latin, so I can’t drop them.

But yeah, I do a little hospital volunteer work, though not as much as I should. I’ll definitely keep your advice in mind. Thanks! :)

Orchestra is a good thing. Not really bad to diss for a bunch of AP class. I would only like drop it for required classes. If you really really like orch then you shouldn’t drop it for some AP. Colleges don’t simply just focus all on AP you know.

Yes they like to see balanced flexible schedules with nice grades and variety of class courses.
