"Should I stay or should I go?"

Hello. The question that I am faced with is if I want to move away for college or stay near home (but definitely live in the dorms).

Top two and pros/cons of each

University of Denver:

7 minutes from my house
debate scholarships and academic scholarships
Pioneer Leadership Program

University of Rochester:

Really awesome curriculum design with almost no required classes
better 'name' school
no scholarship money yet, possible debate scholarship
Halfway across the country.

At the moment, debating for DU (their program is more appealing and UR's), scholarships, and the PLP are making DU balance out the sweet curriculum design of rochester. So at the moment, its coming down to if I should stay, or go. Does anyone have thoughts? Anyone went to a school near home and regretted it? Anyone go far away for a school and regret it?

Any thoughts would be super helpful, thanks very much

In my opinion, it doesn't matter how far away you go, you're still going to be spending the same amount time on campus and away from home.

I definitely see what youre saying. Its not just actually going home, the campus area is just really familiar, its basically home. So if Im at DU I wont get the 'being on my own in a whole new place' growing experience (goods and bads).

Rochester is far superior academically and worth the shift in environment and other things that you are worried about.

if cost isn't a factor, I'd recommend going away from home to experience a new area and meet people with a different outlook. Upstate NY is not Denver, even if they both have snow!

Anyone else have thoughts? Even all you heady Ivy League types can help with this, its just about staying or going.

If I were you, I would go away from home- but that's a decision I already made for myself. Either way, you will be meeting new peopel and experiencing new things in college- its just a question of whether or not that will be new places as well. If the idea of moving away from home appeals to you, I'd say, go for it- money issues aside, it seems like Rochester has more going for it anyway. Good luck with your decision!

if you're going to college, shouldn't you aim for the whole college experience? that includes going somewhere you're not familiar with, meeting people you don't know etc... I think being close from home would detract from your college experience

WOW, your choice is between a school 7 min from home and a school hundreds of miles away? nothing in the middle huh? If you're not one to get homesick too easily I would say go to Rochester, it will be good to be in a new environment.
