Should I still apply to UGA? And please chance me RD! :)

Since I was unable to acquire the copy of my transcript I needed to self-report my grades on Friday the 14th, I missed the Saturday the 15th deadline. Now if I apply, I can't be considered for scholarships. Should I still apply? UGA is a beautiful school that I can see myself fitting into nicely!

Also, can you please chance me for RD?

Thank you!

You should still apply, but honestly that SAT score…it will be tough. GPAs can flucua How many AP classes have you taken and how many AP exams have you passed?

Good luck!

I haven’t taken any AP classes, nor have I taken any AP exams

Of course you should apply! You will never know unless you try. BUT, I think your SAT will set you back.

I don’t think AP’s matter as much as they make it seem. I took ZERO AP courses and tests and got in ED last year.

Being a student at UGA I know some people with SAT scores like that who got in and they tend to be minorities and out of state. As I’m sure you know UGA lacks both of those so they would definitely want you.

As for whether or not you should actually come here. Most students here have hope so if you’re from out of state and you won’t have scholarships I don’t value UGA at $40k a year. If you get into schools that are on par with UGA that would be cheaper for you I would definitely go there. I’m not you though so I don’t know how badly you want to go here or how big of an issue money is.

One more thing to consider. Again I don’t know you so I don’t know your academic ability but the other two kids I know who came here with SAT scores much like yours struggled. UGA tends to have giant freshman weed out courses that are often curved so you’ll be competing against the other students. I don’t know what you tend to major in, but if you were to come here be ready to work hard, especially your first semester or two. I doubt this applies to you because you’re on this website haha, but a lot of kids think they want to go to UGA because we have the stigma for #1 party school, drink all day everyday, hardcore greek life then they get into that sort of stuff and bomb their first semester and end up changing their major. Focus that first semester and build yourself a nice GPA cushion.

As for getting in. They definitely care about the rigor of your courseload in high school. You said you go to a private catholic school though so did they offer any AP courses and if so how many. When colleges look at how many AP’s you took they look at how many you took out of how many were available to you. So if you took zero out of say zero, one, two, or three that your school offerred you would be fine. The average student comes into UGA with six AP/IB classes and 9 credit hours. I came in with 8 APs out of 13 that my school offerred but I know people who came from South Georgia that took the only two their school had and I also know people who went to giant high schools in Atlanta that took close to 15 and came in with over 40 credit hours. You have a lot going for you but at the same time you also have a lot holding you back. You’re a unique canidate and it’s close to impossible to say whether or not you’re going to get in

I wholeheartedly agree with the above poster. I definitely don’t value UGA at $40k a year but it is a GREAT school. Work hard that first semester because everyone else is partying. It will set you apart from the others.

I took 0 AP’s out of 17. You’ll be fine with no AP’s, trust me.

@Johnhughzy That post gave me hope and also made me realize a few things! The reason I’m applying to UGA is because this group called Campus Apartments is offering to let me live at any college with Campus Apartments for free all four years. My top choice is Maryland which has Campus Apartments; however, I highly doubt I’ll get into Maryland. I’ve been accepted into Penn State, my other top choice and in-state school, with $14k in scholarships; however, they don’t have Campus Apartments. When I looked on Campus Apartments’ website, I came across the Abbey West apartments located off-campus from UGA. When I cross-checked UGA, I found this to be the perfect alternative if I don’t get into Maryland since UGA does have Campus Apartments. Plus, I’m more likely to get accepted here. I will still apply, and if accepted, I will weigh my options. $40k is a big bill to foot, but I’ll have to see how much financial aid and outside scholarships i can get. Thank you all for your help and Happy New Year!

Hey, you might want to check if you can live in those apartments your first year at UGA. I think you’re required to live on campus your first year, although it does say there are few exceptions. However, I think the exceptions are for people who live right near campus with their families. Other than that, though, the free apartments sound great for years 2-4! Good luck!

^^^Exactly! I would check on that, too. There are few exceptions to the rule about living on-campus for the first year. One of them is commuting from a nearby home with family, and another one is if you have a family of your own (wife, kids, etc.) that you would be living with (like Family & Grad. housing). But yeah, for years 2-4, that’d be great because Abbey West is an AMAZING place to live. No, I have never lived there, but the simple drive past it, I can tell it is awesome. Also, I have friends that live their, and they say it’s really nice. There’s a lot to consider here, and I hope that you are able to come to terms with your decision. Good luck!

FD31 - To save $5000 a year on housing, you’re willing to pay out of state tuition? That doesn’t make sense. And with SATs that are right around the national average, I don’t think it’s prudent to count on out of state scholarships.
