i have been volunteering at a hospital for two years now. its really boring. i have absolutely no interest in going into the medical field and i'm starting to get increasingly busy too. should i quit? or should i stay so that i can check of all four years on my application?

i've also been volunteering at the library, and i'd to quit that too... it almost seems as if there are no fun places to volunteer anymore.

What type of career are you thinking about? There must be some type of volunteer work that relates. Even if you can't find something similar, if you can find something where you really feel needed, it will not be boring.

I am just a parent, not an admissions officer. You are only a kid once. If you don't enjoy volunteering why don't you talk to your parents about doing something you are passionate about. I don't know your financial situation but having a part time job (that might actually be fun) shows more to me than volunteering for "brownie points". Being responsible at a job, being able to handle school or being involved with sports or school activities shows that the student can handle responsibility and know how to balance things, or is at least trying to learn how to balance things. you should try to do as well as you can in school but grades are only a small part of who you are. I am a physician and nobody asks me what I got in chemistry in high school or how many AP classes I took. I went to an american medical school and my diplomas are in latin. Many patients think I went to school in Italy because they can't read my diploma and my waiting room is full! So the bottom line is, and what we tell our kids is that it is more important who you are, how you relate to people, how kind and compassionate you are. And that you take advantage of what is around you. You never know who is going to take an interest in you whether you are slicing deli meats or working at a gym, if you do the best job you can and are enjoying yourself you will shine! An employer who notices you won't ask you your grades and won't care that you wore pinstripes at the hospital! An interviewer would probably love to hear about a kid who loved his summer job and brought something new and inivative to the place. It would be refreshing! If you want to get a better idea of what it is like to work in the hospital, than volunteering there is great but it sounds like you are doing it for the wrong reasons so find something else to fill your time. Hopefully something you enjoy! Good luck.

Hospital and Library volunteering are dreadfully boring. I agree.

I suggest going to VolunteerMatch - Where Volunteering Begins and see what opportunities are listed in your area. Anything that requires you to be a secretary/assistant job like moving around flowers, filing papers, or making decorations is probably not worth it. Look for opportunities with real-time experience, not second-hand dirty duty.

Quit, and then find a volunteering gig that you actually enjoy. Just think of things you like to do and are good at, and there will be volunteering opportunities that use those skills.
