hey guys I want to study engineering, but at times I am not sure if I am good enough to do so. I got a 640 on my SAT math, and a 650 on SAT Math II. I am a hispanic girl. Im really interested in either environmental engineering or computer engineering, however, I am starting to think that maybe my math skills arent good enough to do so. I also got a 4 on my Calc AB and a 3 on my my Ap Calc BC. I want to do a 3-2 engineering program that is really challenging. I really enjoy math, I am just not amazing at it. Is engineering a bad idea for me?

You definitely have potential here and your AP scores are pretty good. Anything below a 3 is a bit alarming, but you’re fine, especially with Calc AB. You should give engineering a try.

If you are interested in it yes, if not then no.

Give it a try. Most engineering programs out there have introductory courses that usually gives you a tastes of what the program is about and to weed out students who were never meant to be there in the first place.

yeah thats all true, but My college doesnt offer engineering it would be a 3/2 program with Columbia

Your scores are fine. I got a 4 on the Calc AB test as well but school only took 5’s to test out. Fortunately I was able to test out of Calc 1. But anyways, if you really desire to do engineering then go for it.

If you have passion for it then go for it

If you want a job when you graduate then go for it.

You have the ability, based on your scores.

Why are you limiting yourself to the 3-2 program? You should probably decide what’s more important to you - the 3-2 program w/Colombia or an engineering degree from a typical school. You’re certainly able to get the degree at most schools, if the Colombia admittance doesn’t work out.

yeah, before deciding to attend the liberal arts college i did, i had some options to decide from that were fully engineering school, but I feared that if i didnt like engineering i would have to transfer, not sure if it was the right choice but I am now attending a college in the city.

A 3-2 program is underrated…You are just as well doing a 4 year bachelor and getting into the work force right away as an engineer. Honestly in engineering experience is generally more desired than a higher degree..depending on the field. I know for a fact in software that experience definitely trumps education.

I see, the university i currently attend does not have engineering, so thats not a possibility. By completing the 3-2 it would be a B.A of lets say Computer Science or Math and a B.S in Engineering.

Thats doesn’t sound like a bad idea either. If you do CS focus your electives on computer engineering related courses. What interests you most about CE, programming applications, programming hardware, or designing hardware?

Definetely hardware. I took java in h.s and did not enjoy it as much as i enjoyed my cisco classes. I really think i would enjoy engineering, but since the combined program is really intense i would have to take classes now, and I’m afraid of what will happen if i decide it is not for me, or if I dont do so good in those courses.

If your goal is hardware then CS may disappoint you. I suggest looking a school that does EE or CE programs. CS is a lot of software even if you take electives in hardware classes.

I was never really good at math at school, and that never stopped me from studying engineering. In fact, it never stopped me from graduating either. I just worked hard through all my classes, and I majored in electrical engineering, so there was a lot of math (specifically calculus) involved.

Dont let anyone tell you what you cant do, you show them what you can do!

I don’t know if Columbia will work out, but definitely you’ll do fine in any typical engineering school.

yes thats true, but I chose not to attend an engineering school so thats my only choice. I am going to see how this semester goes and if i still feel the same towards engineering. thanks

Yes.

Study Engineering if you like it.
