Hello CC!

I know for a fact I wish to major in Art, Its what I've done for a long time and I really love painting, drawing, all of it. I've never looked at other artists my age around the nation, only those in the classes I've taken in school and at the nearby community college. I've been told I have talent, but now I am unsure. I am looking at fellow CC portfolio's and I am absolutely astonished, the talent here is far beyond my own. Should I countinue to work on my portfolio or drop it because my talent is not as developed and will affect my chances with a college? Thanks a billion.

PS I realize that college's look for paintings drawn from life, and I am working on that right now. Half my portfolio with be conceptual the other half from life.

I wouldn't suggest browsing through my DA becuase the art I consider "old" and not my current style, I keep it in my gallery as a reminder for myself and to show people where I come from.

PS If you need more current work Ill post more, I just haven't gotten them digital yet. And I have alot of works in progress.

THANKS SO MUCH

If art is your passion and you know you want it to be your major, don’t give up on it…its something we told our daughter when she was deciding what to do. Remember that you’re going to “work” about 40 years of your life: do something you LOVE and it won’t seem like work.

Consider taking your portfolio-in-progress to a National Portfolio Day in your area for it to be reviewed by as many schools as you want. When I took my daughter there last year, there were any number of students with all SORTS of art work…both finished and in-progress…that they brought to be evaluated. Excellent feedback is given, and it can help you move the portfolio in the right direction for the school/area of study you’re interested in.

/// Should I countinue to work on my portfolio or drop it because my talent is not as developed… ///

You said the magic words yourself, “…because my talent is not as developed.” In stating this you 1. recognize you have talent, and 2. recognize that what separates you from one other person is development. Well, development is why you go to school! So of course follow your heart and passion, go to school, and continue to develop your talent.

Also, keep in mind that some students develop quickly and some develop slowly, but BOTH end up at the same place in the end. It isn’t a race to the finish…take whatever time you need and don’t be discouraged.

And, the last thing you should do is compare yourself to others. I made that mistake and it set me back 10 years. Someone will always be better than you, and you will always be better than someone else…but it matters not one red cent. Just be as good as you can be. That’s all you can ask of yourself.

Thanks everyone, very kind words here. Sending in a portfolio :)
