Should I submit FAFSA even with high EFC?

I just told my wife, we better file FAFSA for both kids next year - just in case.

We didn’t for my son because he’s in his 3rd year and is on merit.

And my daughter - even though I knew we’d get no money, we applied because she’s a first year and well, you never know.

Turns out she paid off…well, for her. I doubt I see the $300.

You can file your son’s (well, he can but he’ll need your section filled out too) FAFSA now for the 2021-22 school year, and as of next Friday the one for the 2022-23 year. His school may not be distributing money under CARE act but it may be.

I’d do it. Takes 15 minutes, especially if your part is already filled out.

Yes, I am planning on the same. Based on posts, I think we both have one child at the same college…mine did not mention anything so I am guess that money is gone

@tsbna44 – OOH. i think my kid is at your older kid’s school; and we didnt fill out the FAFSA form for this year. But did in the past when we had two in undergrad. Maybe i’ll fill it out now and see if he’d get something (CARE funds) for this year?! i know he could use it!

and @OP - we only filled out the FAFSA for our kids when we two in college. It helped one child with a few subsidized loan options. But otherwise it just didnt matter.

So I don’t know if it will work (Bama) - makes you feel we shouldn’t get it. We didn’t ask at Charleston - it just came.

oh thanks so much !!! RE: CARE funds - he’ll fill out that form link for funds for kids who didnt fill out FAFSA. We have a kid in professional grad school that’s pricey, we are helping her out; but she doesnt count on undergrad kid’s FAFSA as having 2 in college. This sort of hi-jacked original thread, so sorry, but thanks!

We filled it out and sent it to all the schools (one or two required it for merit). Even though we have a high EFC, it didn’t seem to affect her merit awards - she received what we expected from the schools that we expected it from - including bonus awards from the school she ultimately selected (which is typically stingy), and an in-state public that I never thought would give merit to an in-state applicant.
