Should I submit my music supplement to LACs?

Hi all,
I’ve been playing piano for 11 years now, and I don’t know if i should submit a supplement. Other threads I’ve read have been mainly aimed towards extremely competitive applicants for Ivys. I’ve played chopin, mozart concerto, and beethoven sonatas in my high school years. I’m not a prodigy at all, but I’ve played these challenging pieces. The question is, should i submit a supplement (probably the beethoven sonata)?? Threads on here have given me the impression that sometimes it would hurt your application but I dont know if that’s just for the elite schools.
Thanks

I believe a school like Macalester would like to know its applicants well, their drives and notable accomplishments (past drives). I’m not knowledgeable in music but if the pieces are generally considered challenging pieces than I would submit a supplement. IMO, Macalester is putting more emphasis and $ towards the arts, so that should be a good thing for a Macalester app.

IMO one of the downsides of Ivys is the volume of applications necessitates that they view applicants from afar and almost like a finished product. Hence the impression that only the outstanding accomplishment will stand out. That added perceived pressure might not easily go away.

My general view is that any art supplement should be of a very high quality. Admissions officers should see from your application that you have played piano for years.

My daughter submitted her audition tapes to almost all of the liberal arts colleges she applied to. She plays at a high level and has a resume of ECs almost all related to music. Some of the acceptance letters she received mentioned her music submissions in hand written notes. In fact she got a full tuition scholarship from a top 50 LAC and the dean mentioned her musical ability (even though the school is not known for music). If your good, I think it can only help. By the way she applied to submitted music supplements and was accepted at Macalester and got their highest merit scholarship. I’d highly recommend finding a local studio and getting the tapes done professionally. We found a studio that was really reasonable.

@Veryapparent are homemade recordings frowned upon?

absolutely not. For us it was easier to spend $150 at a studio than to get the materials to produce a decent tape. My D was also submitting to music schools so for those the quality needed to be better. If your son or daughter has a music teacher they may likely have the ability to produce a good audio tape.

Hey, I’m also debating sending my own music supplement and from what I’ve heard from college admissions people is that it won’t hurt you. They send it directly to the music department who gives you a ranking. However, only if they rank you “at graduate level” or an equivalent, will it bump up your application in terms of being admitted. Then if they rank you as sort of a typical or good pianist, Middlebury will be like alright cool, but they wouldn’t like push your application from denied to accepted because of it. Honestly i say go for it, nothing to loose!
