I moved into a random triple in my building because I needed a space with a kitchen. My roomates are super passive aggressive and do not care for our roomate agreement at all. Becuase they are friends, they tend to team up against me and laugh behind my back, and I always look bad whenever I bring up issues. Should I keep living with them, or try to switch roomates? I’m really scared I will end up with someone worse.
I would have suggested that you have your RA help you enforce the roommate agreement.
What types of things are they doing?
If they are being loud or leaving food out or whatever, then talk with the RA.
If they are ignoring you, leaving you notes…talk to the RA for advice.
My daughter is switching out after winter break. In her case, the RA, was unable to help and the roommate ignored requests for mediation with an adult that oversees the entire dorm. You should have a conversation with housing for starters. Is there any chance you could meet your potential new roommate? You will have to decide how miserable you are and if it is worth it. Are you roommates considerate and civil most of the time? If not, it doesn’t sound like a good living situation. I wish you the best of luck figuring this out.
While there’s always the chance that by switching roommates you’re jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire the break between first and second semester is a good time to switch in that you’re more likely to be replacing someone who’s going abroad for a semester or who has dropped out of school or taking time off. You may be able to ask around and find a roommate situation where someone you know won’t be there next semester.
