I am a junior in high school and I am interested in being a TA. However, I would like to know if it will have a negative impact when I apply for scholarships or colleges.
How would it have a negative impact? Do you have 1 less class than a “normal” student? Even if you did, I think it would be a plus, not a negative.
I’ve heard from admission counselors that they view a high school TA position on the same level as a study hall - which is primarily viewed as neutral. It isn’t something that generally helps or hurts your college admissions. If your doing a lot more than possibly correcting objective papers and making photo copies a letter of recommendation from a teacher could help. Unless your missing the number of classes needed for a scholarship I don’t think it will help or hurt with those either.
Assuming it won’t detract from your academic schedule, being a TA in and of itself won’t get you into any college and won’t keep you out of any college. As with any other activity, do it if it is something that interests you.
Pros: It shows leadership. You can help other kids.
Cons: It prevents you from taking another class.
What classes would you take next year?
What would you take if you didn’t be a TA?
Would being a tutor be another thing to consider?
Next year I’m going to take calculus, Physics, honors english. Some of them for college credit. I go to a small school so my choices are limited and we do not have AP or IB. The TA will be graded as a pass/fail and was wondering if that will prevent me from getting some scholarships or getting accepted into some Universities.
