Should I tack on CS 35L to my schedule?

Currently planning to take CS 33, Math 32A, Physics 1A, and Physics 4AL. I noticed that 35L is miraculously still open...should I go for it or am I asking for a really tough quarter? It totally fits my schedule. Thanks in advance everyone :)

Scratch that, I’ll be taking Physics 1B instead of 1A. I went ahead and enrolled in CS 35L, I can just drop it later if I want. But I’d still appreciate any advice.

Eh 35L really wasn’t that bad. If Keith Stevens is TAing, try to get him. I had him and he was way cool.

It will be manageable, but don’t expect too much free time.

Thanks, I have several 35L TA recommendations now, so that’s good. The TA’s aren’t showing up yet but hopefully they will soon.

This quarter I’m taking CS 32, Linguistics 1, Math 31B, and Physics 1A, and I have only a little free time. Does that mean I’d be ****ed with my proposed schedule for next quarter? At least if it comes down to it, I can drop 35L.

Hard but not undoable

The thing about 35L is (at least with Keith) that you work on a lot of the stuff in class. If you’re a fast learner and can spend your time efficiently, there is little or no work outside of the normal lab. However, if you’re a slow worker or you need to do extra research to do stuff, you’ll have to devote some more time to it.

I was in the former category and only had to do stuff outside of the lab when we had long assignments.

I think I would fall into the former (or at least I could decide in two weeks whether I do). I’m comfortable with the command line and while I don’t know too much about it, I can use the manpages to learn what I need to know. And I’d definitely be motivated to get everything done in class.

How long are these “long assignments”? Like CS 32/33 status?

not quite that long, although there are some C programming assignments

the longest i had took me like 5 hours outside the lab (a C assignment in a field i am really weak in)

Wow, okay. I didn’t know it was that much work. We’ll see how it goes for the first two weeks.

I’m in 35L this quarter. The workload is not as much as you’d expect it to be. The most lines of code that you’ll ever write in the class will probably be around 50. There are only 3-4 programming assignments and only 1 of them can be called hard. As for the final, I have heard crazy things about it. It all depends on your TA, but according to others, it’s not looking to great for me :(

Thanks, that sounds manageable (except for a possibly crazy-hard final). I have several recommendations of good TA’s so I’ll probably not drop if I get a good one.

I’ve had personal interactions with Keith (outside of classes) and he’s a great guy. I’d highly recommend him, too.

As for your schedule, it looks like you’ll have even less free time than this quarter. Be sure to manage your time well or else you may get screwed by deadlines. Physics labs definitely take up a good chunk of time (even though they are only 2 units), and CS33 and CS35L are project courses so you can expect a lot of time from those courses as well.

Definitely see for yourself how comfortable you are in the first 2 weeks - if you feel like the workload is too heavy, go ahead and drop a course. The quarter only gets faster as the quarter moves on.

Oh geez, and I thought this quarter was bad haha…in any case, I really appreciate the advice :)
