All of my friends are in psych and they want me to do it. I’ve always been interested in psych and I’d like to decide if I want to do it before my senior year. I’ve done three years of Spanish and my parents want me to do Spanish again, but I’m not very good at speaking it. I am very good at writing it but I’ve no clue if I could even speak it well at the end of high school
Google the common data set of colleges (“common data set XYZ University”) you are interested in applying to and see if they require/recommend 4 years of foreign language. It any do, stick with Spanish. If not, do what you like.
And check if they have foreign language graduation requirements that the higher level in high school may help you get to more quickly.
^^exactly. Taking the Span subject test next spring could exempt you from the college foreign language requirement.
btw: AP Psych has to be the lest rigorous of all of them, and adcoms are aware that its an easy course. So, if you need the ‘most rigorous curriculum’ checked, that won’t help.
Thanks for the replies. I’ve just been thinking of all the job opportunities in the future that could come from having a second language. Idk what I want to do yet and honestly, I’ve never been a big fan of Spanish itself
If the 4th year of Spanish will help you with the AP Spanish test, do it. Many colleges have language req
My tablet got ahead of me…
I was going to write that many colleges have language requirements from which a decent AP score can exempt you. It’s a whole lot cheaper to take Spanish in high school than it will be to pay for the same class in college. Plus college psych classes are usually of better depth and quality than those taken in high school. So it makes financial sense to take the language class now and save money for more classes in your major later.
I want to go to Wes Virginia University, and I think they require 3 years. I’m not sure though
FWWI - many colleges may not require or recommend a 4th year but at competitive colleges you are competing with 1000s of applicants who will have taken it and you are at a slight disadvantage for having not taken it. For example, UC Berkeley only “recommends” a 3rd year of a foreign language but top applicants will all have taken 4 years. These are the folks you are competing with.
@gorillaguy2020 see my post #1. I told you exactly how to check so you don’t have to guess. Check any other schools you plan to apply to as well.

Your goal should be to place in 203 or 204. If you get a B or higher in the class, you’ll get retroactive credits AND you won’t have to pay for these credits (unlike the exam you can take for a waiving of these credits, which costs money).
So you guys think I should do Spanish instead of psych?
Yes.
Even if you are going into STEM, I would highly recommend a fourth year of Spanish. It would help you stand out if you do well in it.
Have a good day!
Spanish, yes.
And take Psychology in College.
Take Spanish now & in college. A second language often helps in getting interviews & job offers.
I have a different opinion. IMO if you met the foreign language requirements needed to graduate HS and for any college you are interested in applying to then you are free to take AP Psych. My D dropped foreign language senior year for AP Psych and it was fine.
While true, as others have mentioned, this also depends upon the target colleges and what their graduation requirements are. If the college has a FL requirement for graduation, I’m of the opinion that one should try to knock this out in HS.
Guess I should clarify…my D did.need to take two semesters of foreign language in college to satisfy general education requirements…but she was able to study a language she was interested in that was not offered in our HS so that was part of her decision process (the colleges she was most interested in all offered her preferred foreign language). So bottom line …I felt my D made a thoughtful choice (including understanding any consequences) given her requirements, situation, and interests…you should do the same.
Agreed.
